The Crucible

Duration: 3 hoursFind More: Amateur Production, Period, Drama
Following their sell out success last year with Jamaica Inn, Director John King and his talented cast pull out all of the stops for one of the most powerful plays in American literature. The Crucible is an absolute classic that won the Best Play Tony award in 1953 for Arthur Miller. It is set around the infamous Salem Witch Trials in Massachusetts during 1692. The plot highlights the hysteria that hit the New England colonies and was viewed as a veiled condemnation of the anti communist witch hunt conducted by the notorious Senator Joseph McCarthy during the 50s. This is a gripping historical tale of puritanical purges and is a warning to contemporary society of the dangers of authoritarian bigotry. The lies of a malicious young servant girl are enough to arouse a whole town against 19 innocent people. The ensuing trial is an edge of the seat affair in which a one way trip to the gallows looks like the inevitable verdict.
