Set in 1962 and based on Christopher Isherwood’s 1964 novel, this is Colin Firth’s best film and is a firm favourite for BAFTA and Oscar glory. He has already won Best Actor at the prestigious Venice Film Festival. Firth is a college professor who is still mourning the tragic loss of his lover, Jim, who died six months earlier. Lonely, and alienated, Firth resolves to end it all. The film follows Firth over a day as he sets his affairs in order and reflects on his life. Yet as he visits old friends like the witty Julianne Moore and gains solace from the respect of his students, there seems to be a glimmer of hope that there is a point to tomorrow. Colin Firth gives a subtle, sometimes heartbreaking but always dignified, performance in this very visual film that packs an emotional punch as it showcases the power of love.
