Empire called this “Alice in Wonderland meets Edward Scissorhands” and gave it 5 stars for good measure. Based on Neil Gaiman’s best seller and directed by Henry Selick, Coraline uses the same 2D stop motion animation as his earlier film, The Nightmare Before Christmas. This is the dark side of Alice Through The Looking Glass, as Coraline discovers a cosmic portal to a world of evil spiders and rats rather than flowers and bunny rabbits. She also finds her “other parents” who appear wonderful on the surface but who want to steal her eyes and replace them with buttons. Magical, frightening, amazing, menacing and “One of the best children’s films in years” – Empire. Not for the very young. “Contains mild threat and scary scenes and one use of mild language”.
