Jazz Goes To The Movies
Digby Fairweather’s Half Dozen with Val Wiseman7th March 2010
Jazz has been finding its way into movies ever since Al Jolson starred in the first talkie, The Jazz Singer. This show features themes from classic films, including As Time Goes By from Casablanca, The Shadow of Your Smile from The Sandpiper, Scott Joplin’s The Entertainer from Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid and Moon River from Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Recent movies have harkened back to The Great American Songbook for their themes. Harry Connick Junior’s catchy It Had To Be You from When Harry Met Sally or Nat King Cole’s haunting Stardust, and Have You Met Miss Jones, sung by Robbie Williams in Bridget Jones’ Diary. In a superb new show, Digby and his Half Dozen combine with Val Wiseman, star of her own highly successful show Lady Sings the Blues, to celebrate these hits from the great movies. In the British Jazz Awards announced in late last year, the Half Dozen won the award for the Best Small Group for 2008/9, whilst Val Wiseman won the award for the Best Female Singer.
