Helen Mirren and Christopher Plummer give tour de force performances in this period drama about the last years of Tolstoy’s life. More war than peace, the year is 1910 and the ailing Tolstoy and his legacy are at stake. On one side is his loyal disciple, Paul Giamatti and his followers who believe that Tolstoy’s literary works and their proceeds must be used for the benefit of the people. On the other side is Tolstoy’s feisty wife of 48 years, Helen Mirren, who is convinced that the family are being robbed of their inheritance.
