Wind, Tide & Oar is a compelling exploration of engineless sailing, shot on analogue film over three years. The film delves into the experiences of those who travel solely by harnessing the natural elements alone, following a diverse array of traditional boats and uncovering the unique rhythms and motivations of engineless navigation.
Journeying through rivers, coastlines, and open seas, spanning the UK, the Netherlands, and France, Wind, Tide & Oar creates a contemplative space, addressing themes of ecology, heritage, traditional skills, and maritime history. Using a 1960s hand-wound camera, Wahl offers a poetic and intimate perspective on a millennia-old craft, upended by the invention of mechanised power.
Through the film’s reveries, sailing becomes a means to explore our interaction with and responsibility to the environment. It invites deep refection on our relationship with nature, our understanding of and commitment to sustainability, and our care for the world around us.

One of the first films of its kind, a ritualistic experience and viewed (often repeatedly) by youthful audiences in the late 1960s as a reflection of their realistic hopes of liberation and fears of the establishment.
The film's tagline of "A man went looking for America and couldn't find it anywhere" transcended moviedom. Once called The Loners, Dennis Hopper co-wrote, directed, and starred in the Oscar-nominated biker flick about two men riding motorcycles from Los Angeles to New Orleans to Florida during the tumult of the Vietnam-era '60s. Peter Fonda and Jack Nicholson also starred, and Fonda co-wrote the script with Terry Southern and Hopper, and produced it.
With a budget of well under $1 million, the 1969 guerilla film went on to gross more than $60 million worldwide; it has been referred to as "the definitive counterculture blockbuster."
After filming finished in 1968, it took Hopper a year to edit 80 hours of footage, which included scenes of real drug use, and a jaw-dropping conclusion. Despite a difficult shoot, it launched the prosperous New Hollywood period of moviemaking and ignited a revolution in cinema.

Sensuous contemporary ballet meets the energy of musical theatre in four distinctive short works. Fool's Paradise, The Two of Us, Us, An American in Paris: four works showing the remarkable choreographic range of The Royal Ballet's Artistic Associate, Christopher Wheeldon.
FOOL'S PARADISE
Luminescent and shimmering, Fool's Paradise marked the first of Wheeldon's many collaborations with composer Joby Talbot. It was created in 2007 for Wheeldon's own company, Morphoses, and first performed in 2012 by The Royal Ballet.
THE TWO OF US
The wistful songs of Joni Mitchell set the scene for the UK premiere of The Two of Us, a duet of deep intimacy and yearning. It was created in 2020 for the Fall for Dance Festival in New York, and had American ballet dancers Sarah Mearns and David Hallberg in its original cast.
US (DUET)
Us is a tender duet danced by two men. It was created in 2017 for BalletBoyz and is set to Keaten Henson's music.
AN AMERICAN IN PARIS (BALLET)
The Royal Ballet celebrates Wheeldon's extraordinary success in musical theatre by performing the ballet scene from his Tony Award-winning musical An American in Paris. Set to Gershwin's jazzy melodies, the musical is inspired by the 1951 film of the same name starring Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron. The musical went on to win four Tony awards. The full musical depicts a blossoming romance between the American G.I. Jerry Mulligan and a French ballerina, Lise Dassin. The ballet excerpt was Wheeldon's take on one of the most memorable scenes from the film, an extended sequence in which the two central characters dance through Paris.

Following on from their NODA award nominated production of “The Pirates of Penzance” last year, to celebrate the society’s 40th anniversary, Christchurch Gilbert and Sullivan Society are very pleased to announce that they have selected "The Yeomen of the Guard" as their September production for this year.
"Yeomen", subtitled 'The Merryman and His Maid', was the 11th of the Savoy Operettas, premiered in October 1888 and ran for 423 performances. It is set in the Tower of London during King Henry VIII's reign and is the most emotionally engaging of all their works. Critics considered the score to be Sullivan's finest and the libretto contains considerable humour. The plot is quite intricate but the complexities are all finally and cleverly resolved.
This will be a traditional production of "The Yeomen of the Guard" and one which we feel will bring fun and entertainment to the whole family. Skilfully directed by Adam Davies and David Sandham, last year’s very successful team, the show will be accompanied by a talented 16-piece orchestra under the skilled hands of musical director and conductor Ieuan Davies.
Please note that we offer a very attractive ticket price for under-18s and students to encourage the next generation of G&S aficionados.

SIMON YATES – PLEASURE & PAIN
Presented by Speakers from the Edge
‘Touching the Void’ mountaineer, Simon Yates, is a veteran of over eighty expeditions to high/remote mountains around the globe and shows no signs of slowing down. This is his story of the last decade, of new adventures and climbs in the far north and south, along with summits in South America, Central Asia and the Himalaya.
In 2023, Simon travelled with legendary British mountaineer Mick Fowler to attempt the un-climbed north face of Patkhor in Tajikistan, but contracted food poisoning from their freeze-dried food on just the second day. After some debate, they continued, but this was just the beginning of a series of events that would see them run out of food, retreat below the summit in a storm and Simon taking a bone-breaking 100m fall during the descent. After two days of lying on the glacier waiting for a helicopter, rescuers finally arrived but were unable to carry Simon down. Somehow, he would need to summon the energy for the painful three day walk to safety.
A survival classic, with the added twists of a fast-paced thriller.

10 years ago Dirt In The Gate Movies resurrected the experience of traditional film projection in the BCP area. Since then and over 150 screenings later, we're going back to where it all started with Sam Raimi's classic horror franchise and celebrating THE EVIL DEAD and EVIL DEAD II from 35mm prints. Dr. Kate Egan (Author, The Evil Dead: Cultographies) from Northumbria University's Horror Research Group will once again be joining us to introduce this special event.
THE EVIL DEAD - Five friends travel to a cabin in the woods, where they unknowingly release flesh-possessing demons. Raimi’s seminal horror made a cult icon of Bruce Campbell and turned its director into hot property. Much imitated, but never bettered, The Evil Dead was the birth of an independently-spirited, viscerally- minded new wave in low budget horror cinema.
