The Crucible

The plot highlights the hysteria that hit the New England colonies and was viewed as a veiled condemnation of the anti communist witch hunt conducted by the notorious Senator Joseph McCarthy during the 50s. This is a gripping historical tale of puritanical purges and is a warning to contemporary society of the dangers of authoritarian bigotry. The lies of a malicious young servant girl are enough to arouse a whole town against 19 innocent people. The ensuing trial is an edge of the seat affair in which a one way trip to the gallows looks like the inevitable verdict.
